Introduction

Da Nang, Vietnam, is a city that offers both coastal access and urban convenience, making it an obvious destination for budget-conscious travelers and expats alike. But is it really the cheapest coastal city? Can you really live comfortably there on just $1,000 a month?

After spending 28 days here, I can confidently say yes. Let’s break down my experience and how I managed my expenses while in Da Nang, Vietnam.

Table of Contents

Budget Breakdown for a Month in Da Nang

Rent/Housing: $301 a month per person

Viettel Phone Plans and Costs

Transportation: $30/month

Entertainment and Miscellaneous: $400/month

Personal Experience: Living in Da Nang on a Budget

Conclusion

Budget Breakdown for a Month in Da Nang

Rent/Housing: $301 a month per person

My partner, another couple, and I found a great Airbnb apartment on a high floor with stunning views of the city, just a two-minute walk from My Khe Beach. Waking up to panoramic views of Da Nang and being so close to the beach made it feel like we were living way above our budget.

For $900 a month ($225 per person), the apartment was modern, spacious, and perfectly located. The best part is that Da Nang’s housing market offers a range of options, so even if you want to spend less, you can still find decent accommodation in other parts of the city. If you’re staying longer and rent directly from local landlords instead of through Airbnb, you can likely find accommodations for a fraction of the cost.

If you take day trips like we did, this will add to your housing-related expenses. In addition to monthly rent, I spent $76 in Hoi An for a really nice hotel with the best room in the place. It had a view of some rice fields, included breakfast and bike rentals, and featured a gorgeous infinity pool overlooking the rice fields.

Viettel Phone Plans and Costs

Phone Plan/Data: $6 a month

For mobile service, I opted for a Viettel plan, one of the most affordable and reliable options in Vietnam. I chose a month-long package that cost 140,000 VND or about $5.65 per month, giving me 1.5 GB of data every day.

This was more than enough for navigating the city, ordering taxis, and staying connected.

Food and Dining: $300/month

Food in Da Nang is both affordable and incredibly delicious. We rarely cooked our meals because it was often more expensive and required more effort. When we did want something more familiar like Italian food, we would walk to a local grocery store called Moonmilk. There, you could find your classic Italian pasta, sauce, and sausage. Basil is almost always Thai basil though, haha.

Since there were four of us on the trip, we could split the cost of home-cooked group dinners. Traveling with fewer people or for a shorter period might make that harder to justify. Over 28 days, we spent roughly $122 on groceries per person.

Dining out is where Da Nang truly shines. Meals from street vendors, like pho or banh mi, often cost just $1 to $2. In 28 days, I spent about $313 USD on dining out, and we didn’t really limit ourselves. There are pricier options like Korean barbeque for around $15 and fancy seafood restaurants that can go over $50 per person, but we didn’t visit those often because the cheap street food was so good and readily available.

I would advise being cautious with non-local food. I had some gyoza at a Japanese restaurant by the beach and got pretty bad food poisoning because I think they weren’t cooked through. Just a heads-up. Check out my blog for more details on what there is to eat in Da Nang.

Transportation: $30/month

Da Nang is pretty walkable, but having a motorbike or a bicycle expands your options. Most tourists stay near the beach, which felt less authentically Vietnamese than areas about 30 minutes inland.

You don’t need to rent a motorbike though, because (1) if you don’t have a license, it’s not legal, and if you get into an accident, insurance might not cover you, and (2) apps like Grab make taking a motorbike taxi very affordable. Most attractions, markets, and restaurants are a short ride away and typically cost under $2 USD with a 50 percent tip.

This meant I easily managed my transportation costs at around $28 for 28 days, without the stress of renting or refueling a motorbike. This also included longer transportation for day trips.

Entertainment and Miscellaneous: $400/month

Da Nang offers plenty of free or low-cost activities. The number above could be much lower if you’re living here long-term and don’t participate in as many day trips or activities like surfing lessons. We spent a lot of time at the beach, enjoying sunsets, morning walks, and swims in the warm ocean.

Entry to attractions like Marble Mountain was inexpensive. The city’s cafes were also great places to relax or work, with coffee and a pastry costing under $5. I also took my first surfing lesson here for $47 for a 1.5-hour session. Da Nang is known for its consistent waves and sandy beaches, so definitely check that out. Be aware that wave conditions can vary depending on the season.

We didn’t need medical care while in Da Nang, but healthcare is very affordable. We had travel insurance through SafetyWing for about $46 a month (though the cost fluctuates and can be closer to $60 now).

Some other expenses included:

Custom dress, pants, two shirt repairs, and tip at Moc Tailor Shop: $65

Waterfall tour: $60

Couples massage at a hotel: $56 per person

Laser hair removal (3 areas): $37 (though the quality was not great)

Personal Experience: Living in Da Nang on a Budget

Da Nang truly felt like home from the moment we arrived. Our apartment overlooked the city from a high floor, offering views of both the skyline and the beach. Being two minutes from the water meant we were at the beach every day. Whether it was early morning walks or late afternoon swims, it was easy to enjoy the best of coastal living without spending all our time getting to the ocean.

The people in Da Nang were incredibly kind and welcoming. We often chatted with local vendors and fellow expats, who gave us great recommendations for finding the best local food. Vietnamese cuisine quickly became a highlight of our stay, as it was affordable and full of flavor. One unexpected find was a burger shop that served garbage plates, a dish from my hometown in Upstate New York, which was a fun surprise.

Getting around Da Nang was pretty easy. The beach area is walkable, and if you want to explore more local neighborhoods, taxis and Grab rides are cheap and easy to take. You can rent a motorbike, but be aware of local driving laws and your insurance coverage.

We were initially hesitant about spending so much time in Da Nang since many people recommend staying in Hoi An or heading north to Hanoi. However, I’m so glad we chose Da Nang because of its calm, slow pace. It felt like Miami Beach, but more peaceful and much more affordable. With beaches, mountains, and city life all nearby, Da Nang offers a lot without the high price tag.

Conclusion

Living on $1,000 a month in Da Nang is not just possible, it’s incredibly doable and even comfortable. Here’s a more detailed look at how my monthly expenses broke down:

Housing: $301 (includes $76 for a Hoi An hotel)

Phone Plan: $6

Groceries: $122

Dining Out: $313

Transportation: $28 (includes transportation to Hue and Hoi An)

Entertainment & Miscellaneous: $400 (includes insurance, surf lessons, massages, shopping, tours)

Total: Approx. $1,170

Keep in mind, the extra $170 came from optional travel experiences and self-care splurges. If you’re staying long-term and living like a local, you could easily bring your total closer to $1,000 or even less.

If you’re thinking of relocating to Da Nang or just curious about living on a budget in Vietnam, this city is proof that you don’t need a lot of money to enjoy a high quality of life. Da Nang is definitely one of the cheapest coastal cities in the world.

When planning a trip to Seoul, selecting the right neighborhood can significantly influence your experience. So, where to stay in Seoul, South Korea?

Seoul is a sprawling city with various districts, each offering unique vibes and attractions. Among the most popular areas for tourists are Myeongdong and Hongdae, both known for their distinct charm. In this post, I’ll compare these two neighborhoods to help you decide where to stay during your visit to Seoul.

Introduction to Myeongdong and Hongdae

Seoul is a city that effortlessly combines its rich historical heritage with modern innovation. During my month-long stay, I split my time between Myeongdong and Hongdae, each offering its own unique appeal. Understanding the pros and cons of these neighborhoods can help you decide which suits your travel style best.

Myeongdong: The Heart of Shopping and Entertainment

Soba noodle stalls in Myeongdong

Pros of Staying in Myeongdong

Myeongdong is one of Seoul’s most famous shopping districts, bustling with activity and lined with countless stores, restaurants, and entertainment options.

If you love to shop or are a food enthusiast, Myeongdong is a paradise. The area is a shopper’s dream, offering everything from high-end brands to unique Korean cosmetics and fashion.

Additionally, its central location makes it convenient for exploring other parts of Seoul, thanks to excellent public transportation links.

The street food scene here is incredible, with a wide variety of Korean snacks and dishes available at every corner.

I also found that Myeongdong is a lot more English-friendly. Compared to Hongdae, more signs and menus are available in English here.

Cons of Staying in Myeongdong

However, Myeongdong has its downsides. The area can be overwhelmingly crowded, especially on weekends and holidays, which might detract from your experience. Due to its popularity, accommodation and food can be more expensive here compared to other areas in Seoul. Finally, the neighborhood’s tourist-centric nature might not appeal to those seeking a more authentic Korean experience.

Hongdae: The Hub of Youth Culture and Creativity

Pros of Staying in Hongdae

A lively street in Hongdae at night, filled with people enjoying the nightlife

In contrast to Myeongdong, Hongdae, short for Hongik University Street, is known for its vibrant youth culture, indie music scene, and artistic vibe.

Hongdae is a neighborhood that never sleeps, filled with street art, indie shops, and unique cafes. While this vibrant atmosphere is exciting, it can be challenging to find anything open early in the morning. The area truly comes alive at night, with a dynamic nightlife scene that features an array of clubs, bars, and live music venues.

I loved how compared to Myeongdong, Hongdae offers a more authentic local experience. There seemed to be hardly any tourists in our area, and you could tell that businesses catered toward locals, not tourists.

Another benefit of staying in Hongdae is the affordability of accommodation and dining options. I definitely noticed this when looking around for accommodations online. Prices are usually a lot more expensive in Myeongdong.

Hole-in-the-wall fried chicken restaurant in Hongdae

Cons of Staying in Hongdae

On the flip side, Hongdae’s vibrant nightlife can lead to noisy nights, which might be bothersome for those seeking a quieter stay.

While the neighborhood is well-connected to public transportation, it’s slightly less central compared to Myeongdong, making travel to some of Seoul’s main tourist attractions a bit more time-consuming.

Additionally, fewer signs and menus are available in English, which can pose challenges for non-Korean speakers (I had to pull out and use Google Translate quite often).

My Personal Experience: Myeongdong vs. Hongdae

Starting in Hongdae

During my five weeks in South Korea, I spent the first two in Hongdae, where I quickly grew attached to Seoul’s vibrant atmosphere. My Airbnb was just a 10-minute walk from the Han River, which was great because the riverfront has walking and biking paths lined with parks and free workout equipment. One day, my friends and I rented tandem bikes and rode along the water, stopping at cafes along the way – I highly recommend if you have time.

The nightlife in Hongdae was another highlight, with numerous bars, clubs, and live music venues. Evenings were spent bar hopping and trying delicious Korean street food, which made for some memorable nights. The area’s youthful energy, thanks to the nearby university, made it feel lively without being overly touristy or stuffy.

When I return to Seoul, I’ll definitely choose to stay in Hongdae over Myeongdong, but that’s just my preference, I am not much of a shopper haha.

Moving to Myeongdong

After two weeks, I moved to Myeongdong, which offered a stark contrast to the laid-back vibe of Hongdae. Myeongdong was always busy with streets packed with shoppers, tourists, and selfie-takers. The constant crowds felt overwhelming, and the higher prices for accommodation and food were noticeable.

I also noticed that the variety of restaurants was very low. In the area that we were in more than half of the restaurants served over-priced Korean barbeque. My apartment in Myeongdong was less comfortable (pretty much had no windows lol) and more expensive compared to Hongdae.

With all that being said, the shopping here was truly unbeatable, so if you’re into retail therapy, than this is your spot.

Myeongdong vs. Hongdae: Which is Best for You?

Step 1: Define Your Priorities

Deciding between Myeongdong and Hongdae depends on your priorities and travel style. First, define what matters most to you: shopping, nightlife, local experiences, or convenience. If your primary goal is shopping and easy access to other parts of Seoul, Myeongdong might be the better choice. If you prefer vibrant nightlife, creative energy, and a more local experience, Hongdae could be more suitable.

Step 2: Consider Your Budget

Next, consider your budget. Hongdae generally offers more affordable options for accommodation and dining, which might be ideal if you’re traveling on a budget.

Step 3: Evaluate Your Language Comfort

Think about your comfort level with language. If you prefer ease of communication, Myeongdong’s English-friendly environment may make your stay more comfortable.

Step 4: Think About Crowds and Noise

Consider whether you’re comfortable with large crowds and noise. Myeongdong tends to be more crowded and touristy, while Hongdae offers a more relaxed, albeit lively, atmosphere.

Step 5: Decide on Your Activities

Finally, think about the activities you enjoy. If you love shopping and street food, Myeongdong is your spot. If nightlife and a creative vibe are more your speed, head to Hongdae.

Conclusion: Myeongdong vs. Hongdae

Choosing between Myeongdong and Hongdae depends on what you’re looking to get out of your trip. Myeongdong is perfect for those who want to be in the heart of the action, surrounded by endless shopping and dining options. On the other hand, Hongdae offers a more relaxed and authentic experience, with vibrant nightlife and a creative atmosphere.

Both neighborhoods have their unique appeal, and if you have the time, I recommend experiencing both. By exploring different areas, you’ll gain a deeper appreciation for Seoul’s diverse culture and energy.

When deciding where to stay in Seoul, consider what aspects of the city you want to immerse yourself in. Whether you choose Myeongdong or Hongdae, you’re in for an unforgettable time in this dynamic city.

A Taste of Tradition: Exploring Kazakh Cuisine

Kazakhstan, known for its expansive steppes and rich nomadic heritage, offers a culinary journey that reflects its unique history and culture.

My deep connection to Kazakhstan comes from childhood summers spent with family in Almaty, where I developed a firsthand appreciation for its traditional foods. If you’re planning a trip to Kazakhstan, check out my blog for a perfect one-week itinerary.

In this blog post, I’ll share some of the most iconic dishes of Kazakh cuisine to help you discover the best food in Kazakhstan.

What is Traditional Kazakh Food?

Traditional Kazakh food is inherently nomadic, designed for a lifestyle that required portability, durability, and food on the go.

Historically, Kazakhs were herders who raised horses, sheep, cows, and camels, relying on these animals for transportation, clothing, and food. This way of life led to the development of cooking techniques that focused on preserving meat and milk products, ensuring they could last through long journeys.

Additionally, Kazakh cuisine has been heavily influenced by the culinary traditions of neighboring countries, including Russia, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, and China. I noticed this is strongly reflected in the spices used within the food.

Best Food in Kazakhstan You Must Try

What is Beshbarmak made of?

Beshbarmak: Beshbarmak is Kazakhstan’s national dish, which means “five fingers” because people eat it with their hands. It’s made of boiled meat, usually horse or lamb, served over flat noodles with an onion sauce.

Beshbarmak – horse sausage and noodles

Manti: Manti are steamed dumplings filled with lamb or beef and onions. Influenced by Central Asian and Turkish traditions, this Kazakh dish embodies family and community values through its communal preparation and sharing.

Manti dumplings with beef and lamb served with a tomato-based sauce

What is Shashlik made of?

Shashlik is made by grilling pieces of meat on skewers. Traditionally, it uses lamb or goat, but you can also find it made with pork, chicken, or beef. The meat is marinated in a mix with yogurt or vinegar, which makes it soft and flavorful.

The Influence of Nomadic Life on Kazakh Cuisine

Kazakhstan’s terrain and climate have shaped its culinary traditions. The need for food that could endure long periods without spoiling led to methods like drying and salting meat and fermenting milk. These practices ensured that Kazakh nomads had reliable sources of nutrition during their migrations.

For example, dishes like kurt and shubat are products of this necessity. Kurt’s high salt content and compact form made it easy to transport and store, while shubat’s fermentation process preserved the milk’s nutrients and made it safe to consume over time.

Conclusion

Kazakh cuisine is a testament to the country’s rich history and resilient spirit.

From the practical yet delicious nomadic foods to the communal dishes that bring people together, Kazakhstan’s culinary traditions offer a unique glimpse into its culture. The influence of neighboring countries, such as Russia, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, and China, has further enriched Kazakh cuisine, adding layers of flavor and diversity to its dishes.

As you explore these flavors, you’ll gain a deeper understanding of the nomadic lifestyle and the importance of community in Kazakh society.

Step 1: Understanding Raja Ampat and Why It’s Worth the Trip

Raja Ampat, which means “Four Kings,” is a collection of over 1,500 small islands, cays, and shoals. Renowned for its rich marine biodiversity and remoteness, it’s a top destination for divers worldwide. However, reaching this paradise isn’t as straightforward as booking a direct flight (fortunately and unfortunately haha). Here’s a closer look at why Raja Ampat is worth the effort.

The Untouched Beauty

Unlike more commercialized destinations, Raja Ampat remains relatively untouched, probably because it is so hard to get to. The islands boast pristine beaches, dense jungles, and vibrant marine ecosystems. It’s not just a diving destination; it’s an adventure into one of the most beautiful and remote parts of the world.

Sunset view from an outlook on Kri Island in Raja Ampat

The Marine Biodiversity

Raja Ampat is often referred to as the crown jewel of the Coral Triangle, home to 75% of the world’s known coral species. During my trip, I remember the sheer diversity of fish and corals – it felt like diving in a natural aquarium. You can expect to see everything from tiny pygmy seahorses to majestic manta rays, though I didn’t see manta rays on my visit because I went during the off-season.

Is Raja Ampat worth visiting?

On my trip to Raja Ampat in mid-June, the journey was a long one. My partner and I basically spent an entire day travelling, and we were flying from Bali. Multiple flights, boat rides, and connections.

However, I have never seen anything like Raja Ampat in all of my travels. The water is absolutely pristine, truly comparable to an aquarium. You could see a huge colorful reef right from the jetty. The travel days were absolutely worth it for that experience.

Despite the rainy weather, my partner and I had a wonderful time. The rain would start and stop and the clouds helped prevent awful sunburns. Lack of plankton in the water made the visibility insane, and there were far less people than during peak season at the homestay and the dive sites.

Step 2: Planning Your Journey – How to Get to Raja Ampat

So, you’ve decided to read on? Buckle up because this is going to be a long blog post lol. The phrase “how to get to Raja Ampat” might seem straightforward, but the journey involves several stages, each requiring careful planning.

Booking Your Flights

International Flight to Indonesia

Your adventure begins with an international flight to Indonesia unless you are already in the area. Most travelers fly into Jakarta (Soekarno-Hatta International Airport) or Bali (Ngurah Rai International Airport).

From these major hubs, you’ll need to book a domestic flight to Sorong. My partner and I were situated in Ubud, Bali, so even though were were on the right island, we had the extra step of taking a 1 hour long cab to the airport in Canggu, Bali.

Domestic Flight to Sorong

Beach sunset before our flight in Canggu, Bali

Pretty much everyone says that Sorong is the gateway to Raja Ampat.

Garuda Indonesia, Lion Air, and Sriwijaya Air offer regular flights from Jakarta and Bali to Sorong. My partner and I had a direct flight with Garuda Indonesia operated by Virgin Atlantic on the way there (we used a Virgin Atlantic point transfer bonus to save some money, total cost came out to be about $300USD for the two of us). The flight departed at 2:15AM and landed at 6:20AM. Safe to say we were very tired.

You should download the taxi application “Grab” before you land in Sorong, as this will be much more affordable than taking an airport taxi. One downside of Grab in this area is that you will have to walk 5 minutes outside of the airport to be able to order a taxi. This is because local taxi drivers hate the Grab application and it is not allowed to be used right outside of the airport.

Arriving in Sorong

Overnight Stay

Depending on your flight schedule, you might need to stay overnight in Sorong, as the ferry to Waisai only operates at 9AM and 2PM. There are several hotels near the airport which offer comfortable accommodations and easy access to the ferry terminal.

Should I stay a night in Sorong?

My partner and I chose to take a red-eye flight from Bali to Sorong, because we didn’t want to spend an extra day in Sorong. We were very tired, but figured that there is not much to do in Sorong, it is a very small city, and folks are not very used to tourists. If you are flying from another country, such as the United States, staying the night in Sorong might be a nice break from travelling.

Step 3: Reaching Raja Ampat – The Final Stretch

Taking the Ferry from Sorong to Waisai

Ferry Schedule

The most common way to reach Raja Ampat from Sorong is by ferry to Waisai, the capital of Raja Ampat Regency.

Ferries operate twice daily, usually around 9AM and 2PM, and take about 2 hours. It’s always a good idea to check the latest ferry schedule if you can. Sometimes the ferry does not operate because of a national holiday.

Ticket Purchase

You can purchase ferry tickets at the Pelabuhan Rakyat (public port) in Sorong.

Prices vary, but a one-way ticket typically costs around IDR 150,000 (approximately USD 9). My partner and I paid $7.74 USD. I recommend that you arrive at the port early to secure your ticket, as the process becomes increasingly hectic the closer it gets to departure time. I noticed that locals often cut the line and pay in cash, without receiving a receipt.

You can purchase an economy ticket or a VIP ticket.

For the economy ticket, you will be sitting pretty closely to other passengers on a plastic bench, without air conditioning. VIP seats resemble nice airplane seats and are located in air-conditioned areas of the ferry. Please note that when you buy a ticket, you will have an assigned seat. This was confusing at first because a lot of locals did not have assigned seats and were standing or sitting in available areas (like the stairs to the bathroom).

Where is the Sorong – Waisai ferry ticket office?

Please see the image at the top of this blog to reference what I am talking about.

Finding the place where you had to buy ferry tickets was quite difficult. There were no signs in English, and, when we arrived early in the morning everything was closed. This may have been because it was off season, but it surprised me nonetheless. Before visiting Raja Ampat I read online that people with boats will offer to take you to your homestay. My partner and I did not experience this when we visited in June. Nonetheless, I would not recommend this, it is better to arrange transportation directly with your homestay before the start of your trip.

A side note for women on the Waisai ferry experience. As a woman I felt uncomfortable wearing shorts in this area. I would recommend wearing pants or some sort of cover up, as a lot of folks are Muslim and dress more modestly than say people in the United States.

Arriving in Waisai

Transportation to Your Accommodation

Once in Waisai, you will need to arrange transportation to your accommodation. Many resorts and homestays offer pick-up services from the ferry terminal. It’s essential to coordinate this in advance to ensure a smooth transfer.

How to get to Kri Island in Raja Ampat?

During our trip, my partner and I stayed at the Yenbuba Homestay on Kri Island, where they had arranged a speedboat pickup from Waisai. The cost of the transfer from Waisai to Kri depends on the number of people traveling with you. A private transfer at this homestay is listed at 800,000 IDR (about $50 USD), but the more passengers on the boat, the less each person pays, as the cost is split.

At least, that’s what the homestay staff told me. However, when we arrived, the coordinator informed us that the transfer would cost 400,000 IDR for the two of us (about $24.34 USD). We agreed to the price, but they ended up loading around 10 people onto the boat.

This was frustrating, but we didn’t want to damage our relationship with the homestay coordinator, so we paid the extra money:/ They also ran out of gas midway through the boat ride, but that is another story haha.

Step 4: Choosing the Right Accommodation in Raja Ampat

Where you stay can significantly impact your Raja Ampat experience. I spent a lot of time trying to figure out the best place to stay in the area. The region offers a range of accommodations, from budget-friendly homestays to luxurious resorts.

Types of Accommodation

Homestays

Homestays offer an affordable way to experience local culture. These family-run establishments provide basic amenities and an opportunity to immerse yourself in the local way of life. Yenbuba Homestay on Kri Island is a great option, where you can enjoy a more authentic experience.

Eco-Resorts

For a more comfortable stay, eco-resorts like Raja Ampat Biodiversity Eco Resort, and Papua Paradise Eco Resort offer a balance of comfort and sustainability. These resorts typically provide full-board packages, including transportation, meals, and diving excursions.

Luxury Resorts

If you’re looking for a more luxurious experience, consider resorts like Raja4Divers Resort, Sorido bay Resort, Misool Eco Resort, and Raja Ampat Biodiversity Eco Resort. These resorts offer premium accommodations, gourmet dining, and personalized dive trips. I found them to cost about double that of a homestay based trip.

Where should I stay in Raja Ampat?

Yenbuba Homestay on Kri Island

Homestays provide a budget-friendly way to immerse yourself in local culture and visit one of the most amazing diving spots in the world. My partner and I decided to stay at the Yenbuba Homestay on Kri Island because of the positive reviews online and it’s proximity to the Soul Scuba Dive Shop.

Raja Ampat Homestay Food

The food was typically rice, fish, and vegetables, with occasional tofu, eggs, or chicken. Fresh fruit and sometimes donuts were also served for dessert.

Breakfast included bread (which apparently other homestays don’t offer bread at breakfast) with peanut butter, jam, honey, or chocolate spread, along with fruit. Tea and coffee were always available, though the hot water did run out sometimes.

Meals at Yenbuba are communal, which is a great way to meet other guests. However, if you arrive late, you might miss out on some of the food.

The homestay coordinator is accommodating regarding food restrictions, but he can only do so much. My partner and I befriended a woman with Celiac (no gluten) on our trip. She had to eat eggs and rice pretty much the entire time we were there, since most food is prepared with soy sauce which often contains gluten.

Raja Ampat Accommodation

Yenbuba Homestay maintains their grounds very well. Every morning the beach and surrounding areas would be swept. The communal (hot) showers and (flushing) toilets, which were recently built, are very clean. Electricity is available from around 1PM until midnight and again for an hour or two at 5AM.

My partner and I opted for a premium beach bungalow, mainly for the convenience of an ensuite toilet and a cold shower. However, we quickly realized that while it’s nice to have a private bathroom, it’s not directly connected to the sleeping area—you have to walk outside to reach it.

Given this, I’d actually recommend the over-water bungalows instead. They’re more affordable, equally comfortable, and come with freshwater showers perfect for rinsing off saltwater or sand (note that no soap is allowed since the runoff goes directly into the ocean).

Apparently there is a slight rat problem on the island, but thanks to the plastic container provided by the Yenbuba coordinator for storing food, we didn’t have any issues.

Being close to the dive shop was incredibly convenient, especially during high tide. If you stay at other homestays on the island, which aren’t next to Soul Scuba, you’ll need a boat pickup and drop-off during high tide, as walking on the beach is the only way to get around. While the isolation might be appealing if you’re traveling with others, it may be tough to make friends if you’re a solo traveller.

However, I did read that it’s considered disrespectful to walk around the village in just your bathing suit, so be sure to change into proper clothing when you’re not at the beach. My partner and I only stayed at Yenbuba for 4 nights, so we didn’t do laundry, but I am pretty sure you can pay to have it done.

Soul Scuba, the dive shop situated right on a jetty in front of the homestay, offered incredible diving experiences. The view off of the jetty was insane – I saw a baby octopus, little sharks, and plenty of fish. At night, my partner and I would walk out onto the illuminated jetty to watch all of the activity; for example we saw a really cool squid hunting for fish.

One thing to note is that pretty much everyone on the island of Kri has the day off on Sundays. This included Soul Scuba being closed and no transportation being available to get off of the island. I think this is the same at other resorts in the area, but I am not 100% certain. Just something to take note of when you’re building out your traveling and diving schedules.

Step 5: Diving and Exploring Raja Ampat

I won’t dive (pun intended) into all of the different dive sites and excursions you can take on your trip, as there are hundreds and each dive center decides what sites have the best conditions on any particular day.

I will say, that if you do not scuba dive, you can still thoroughly enjoy snorkeling in Raja Ampat. The water is so beautiful and full of life! My partner and I snorkeled for 2 days straight right off of the jetty. Even though it was very close to the shore, it was the best snorkeling that I have ever done!

Reaching Raja Ampat might require some extra effort, but trust me, every step of the journey is worth it. The pristine waters, vibrant marine life, and untouched beauty of this remote paradise make it a destination like no other.

Whether you’re an avid diver or simply seeking a wild adventure, Raja Ampat offers an experience that’s truly unparalleled. So, pack your bags, plan your route (using my blog haha), and get ready for the adventure of a lifetime!

1 Week in Kazakhstan | Almaty Sightseeing | Do it Yourself | The Perfect Itinerary

Kazakhstan, specifically Almaty, is near and dear to my heart since a lot of my extended family lives there and I spent a lot of my childhood summers at my grandparent’s dacha (a second home in the country). So, when I decided to travel to Asia, it was an obvious time to visit.

My friends and I visited Kazakstan in late May and the weather was absolutely perfect. Temperatures stayed between 50 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit, and it did rain a couple of the days, but that didn’t stop us from exploring.

Table of Contents

Kazakhstan 7 Day Trip Itinerary

What to Know Before You Go to Kazakhstan for Tourism

Is Kazakhstan expensive?

Apps and Websites

I will go into more detailed descriptions for each of the days below.

What to Know Before You Go to Kazakhstan for Tourism

Is Kazakhstan expensive?

At the time of writing this, 500 Kazakhstani Tenge was equivalent to 1.05 USD. I would say that Almaty is not cheap, but also not wildly expensive.

I am traveling with 3 other people, so that helps with housing costs, but when calculated, each of us spent about 240 USD on housing for a week in Kazakstan. That number also includes our double booked housing night; when we went to the Charyn Canyon and the lakes we decided to keep the same Airbnb in Almaty for convenience. That comes out to be about 34 USD per person, per day to stay in Kazakstan for 1 week.

Apps and Websites

Download these apps before your trip to Kazakhstan

Google Translate – helpful to download the Russian and Kazakh language libraries, so you can translate offline

Yandex Go – taxi app similar to Uber, make sure your credit card works, otherwise you can pay with cash

Yandex Maps – navigation app similar to Google Maps

Airalo – an app where you can get an esim before your trip

GPSmyCity – an app where you can download an offline, self guided city tour

Check out these websites to help you plan your trip to Kazakhstan

Visit Almaty

Caravanistan

Get Your Guide

Sim Cards

eSim Route

Since we were getting to Almaty super late at night, we wanted to minimize our stress and things we had to do at the airport when we landed. We also were not sure that a physical sim card kiosk would be open. So, we opted to purchase a 5 GB eSim through Airalo for 10 USD operated by Beeline (it was originally 13 USD, but we used someone else’s 3 USD off coupon).

I wish we installed the eSim before our travel day though, because there was no good public WiFi (there was public WiFi, but you had to have a local phone number to connect). Thankfully, one of my friends was able to turn on his data and we were able to install our esims and order a taxi through Yandex Taxi. If you use my link or referral code (TATIAN0340) for Airalo, you will get 3 USD off of your first purchase and I will get a 3 USD credit for my future eSims:)

Physical Sim Card Route

In reality, I was surprised to see that there was a lot of activity at the Almaty airport, even so late at night (we landed around 1 AM). So, if you do not want to download an eSim app or figure out how to install it, you can probably, pretty easily, go to one of the open sim card kiosks at the airport and they will set everything up for you. You might even get a better deal.

Key Facts about Kazakhstan

Central Asia’s Largest Country

Kazakhstan is a vast country in Central Asia, bordered by Russia to the north and northwest, China to the east, and Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan to the south. It ranks as the largest country in Central Asia and the ninth largest globally. The capital was formerly Astana but is now known as Nur-Sultan.

Kazakhstan’s Independence

Kazakhstan gained independence from the Soviet Union in 1991, forging its identity despite historical ties that once excluded it from Central Asia. The country shares significant cultural and geographical similarities with its neighboring nations. It’s diverse geography encompasses mountains, forests, rivers, lakes, deserts, and expansive steppes.

Kazakhstan’s Historical Legacy and Cultural Evolution

Historically, Kazakhstan was inhabited by nomadic tribes before becoming part of the Mongol Empire and later falling under Russian rule. The Soviet era marked profound changes, including the settlement of nomads and the influx of diverse Soviet populations. Today, Kazakhstan is home to approximately 18 million people. Islam is the predominant religion, though cultural expressions vary. Kazakh and Russian are the official languages, reflecting the country’s multicultural heritage.

Fun fact, Almaty’s former name, Alma-Ata, translates from Kazakh to “father of apples.” According to Atlas Obscura, this is because,

when modern genome sequencing projects affirmatively linked domestic apples to Malus sieversii, Almaty and its surrounding land were officially recognized as the origin of all apples.

This was a resting day during our trip. We took a red eye flight with IndiGo Airlines and did not get much sleep at all.
Ascension Cathedral

28 Panfilov Guardsmen Park

Green Bazaar

Arbat Shopping Street

I like to use GPSmyCity when visiting a new country. It is a great app to use if you want to download an offline self-guided tour of the area.

Day 3: Tau Spa Center Day Trip (Stay: AirBnb)

For the next three days, we were able to borrow my uncle’s 4-wheel-drive car and drive around the area more freely. I would highly recommend renting a car during your visit. If you do not feel comfortable driving in another country, that is totally understandable, too. Taxis and tours are pretty easy to book in the area.

The Tau Spa Center is located less than an hour away from Almaty’s city-center. We chose to go here instead of the Arasan bathhouse because it’s facilities are mostly outdoors, surrounded by nature. When we went, the weather was pretty rainy and gloomy. Honestly though, that was perfect for this attraction. Just imagine, you’re sitting in an outdoor heated pool or hot tub, looking out onto the snow covered mountainside.

Important things to note about the Spa Center:

you will have to pay a ~ 5 USD per car fee to enter the mountain area, ensure you receive a receipt of purchase;, corruption is a problem, attendants may pocket your entrance fee payment

towels are not free, you must pay a small fee to acquire towels

water shoes or sandals are required to go into the facility; you can also pay a small fee to acquire those

we spent about 6 hours on this activity altogether; 1 hour driving there, 4 hours at the spa, and 1 hour driving back

try to avoid driving during rush hours, as they can be intense in the city

you can pay by card here

The Tau Spa Center was a highlight of our trip and should not be missed!

Like I said previously, my friends and I had access to a car while we were exploring Kazakhstan. This was so helpful in setting our own pace for the trip and taking as much or as little time at each destination as we wanted. If you decide to go the set tour route, no biggie, there are plenty of well organized group and private tours available online.

Our day looked as follows:

7AM – rise and shine!

8AM – quick breakfast at the Airbnb, then get on the road for a ~3 hour drive to the Cheryn Canyon

11AM – bathroom and shashlik to refuel (shashlik is a traditional Kazakh food; grilled meat, usually lamb, on a skewer)

11:30AM – Arrive in Cheryn Canyon, use the very nice facilities and walk out onto the upper viewpoint; we did not find many souvenir shops, the one at this Welcome Center was the best one in my opinion, pretty expensive though:/

12:30PM – Walk back to the main building and get lunch at the Tary Restaurant that is in the Cheryn Canyon Welcome Center (not the best restaurant, but pretty much the only one in the area

2PM – Walk down the stairs leading into the canyon by the Welcome Center. You can either walk 1.5 miles downhill through the Canyon or, you can pay about $1 USD (one way) to take a bus; we chose to walk down (to take pictures and look at the canyon at a slower pace) and take the bus on the way back

5PM – Get on the road to drive about 30 minutes to the Black Canyon for some pictures

6PM – Get on the road to drive about 30 minutes to a small village for dinner

7PM – Dinner; we got dinner at this place (pictures below), because it at least had some reviews and you got to eat in a Yurt haha

Short answer is, yes! This is where I stayed: AFrame_Kolsai

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="2500" height="1667" sizes="(max-width: 2500px) 100vw, 2500px" src="https://abroadtanya.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/Saty-A-Frame.webp" alt="The view is of the A-Frame accommodation that Tanya and her friends stayed in while in Saty, Kazakhstan.
There are not too many places to stay where you can book online in the Kolsai and Kaindy Lakes area, especially not for 5 people traveling together. At first, I was looking into staying someplace with a view of the lake, but I am glad I decided against it.

A lot of accommodation options that I have found that are either close to the lakes or have a view of the lakes are a mess to get to and you have to travel for a while on roads that do not connect to the main road. Meaning you have to backtrack to get to the main road and find yourself in the central area of the park.

I recommend staying in Saty, Kazakstan because there are more accommodation options with better reviews and prices.

What are the best reviewed home stays in Saty, Kazakhstan?

These are the best reviewed home stays in Saty, Kazakhstan for a more authentic experience:

Gostevoy Dom Kamay

Gostevoy Dom Malik-Aygul’

Gostevoy Dom Temirkhana Umbetaliyeva

KOLSAY_KAZAKH_VILLAGE

FYI “Gostevoy Dom” translates to “Guest House”.

I will say, however, that these will be more difficult to book without speaking Russian, as you will probably have to call or WhatsApp message the hosts to reserve your date(s).

If you’re feeling a simpler accommodation booking experience, that is totally understandable. There are some accommodation options available on sites like Booking and Agoda. If you don’t pay the full amount online though, make sure you bring enough cash to cover the stay. I booked the a-frames through Booking, fully expecting them to just charge my card on file, but they told me I had to pay in cash. Thankfully we had enough cash between us, but don’t make the same mistake as me.

Day 5: Kolsai and Kaindy Lakes (Stay: AirBnb, A-Frame Kolsai)

7AM – rise and shine!

7:45AM – breakfast at the a-frames, pick up snacks at a convenience store, then get on the road for a ~30 minute drive to Kolsai Lake (they have pretty nice restroom facilities for a small fee, I think about 20 US cents)

8:30AM – start your walk down to the lake, the area is very well maintained and developed; we chose to walk on the left side of the lake, it was very nice; at the end of the left trail is an awesome photo spot, and since you’re theoretically there so early, you may have it to yourself:) FYI, sadly, you cannot swim in this spot

10AM – Get back to the parking lot and drive about 1 hour to Kaindy Lake (I would only attempt this in a 4 wheel drive SUV, the road is terrible at some points, I am sure it gets even worse after it rains, and you have to cross at least two small creeks. I do think they have little busses parked at the entrance of the crappy road, so you could just pay one of them to take you)

11PM – arrive at Kaindy Lake, (they have pretty nice restroom facilities for a small fee, I think about 20 US cents) decide whether you would like to walk 30 minutes to 1 hour uphill to the actual lake, pay about $10 for a semi-sketchy, but picturesque horseback ride, or pay less than 5 USD for a bus ride; we opted for the horseback ride

11:30PM – Enjoy Kaindy Lake, eat your previously purchased snacks, as there are not many food options available

12PM – Walk up the Kaindy Lake trail, past the water level viewpoint, up the hill to the left for an aerial view of the water (there is a bench here). After, go back down that hill and walk uphill though the forest. Even though this way back is a 15-30 minutes longer than the other way back, it is much more shaded and very pretty. Also, there are 2 more small lakes up there, and if you get tired of walking, there are busses available to take you the rest of the way back for a small fee.

1PM – hop in the car and drive about 1 hour back to the same village you stopped in for dinner in a yurt yesterday to have a late lunch at today; we ate here: Donerka

3PM – hop in the car after lunch to start the ~ 3 hour drive back to Almaty

6PM – dinner in Almaty at Хачапури Хинкальевич, a delicious Georgian restaurant

Introduction

Budget airlines. Love ’em or hate ’em, chances are you’ll find yourself on one sooner or later.

Recently, I had to fly with Vietjet within Vietnam. My friends and I initially thought about taking the train, but when we weighed the timings and prices, flying seemed to make more sense (spoiler alert, this was the wrong decision). A quick 1.5-hour flight from Ho Chi Minh City to Da Nang for $57.40 USD (this was in March of 2024)? It was a no-brainer compared to a 20+ hour train ride at $40.25 USD.

Sure, the train would have offered picturesque views of the Vietnamese countryside, but we decided to save that experience for a different leg of our journey. Flying it is. So, if you’re facing a similar choice, here are 5 tips to make your Vietjet experience as smooth as possible.

1. Vietjet Air Check in Process

The Vietjet Air airline offers a few options for check-in: online, at the counter, or using a kiosk for domestic flights. When I attempted to check in online, the website stubbornly insisted that my reservation code didn’t exist. This frustration was shared by the group I was traveling with. Even reaching out to a Vietjet representative didn’t solve the issue; I was simply told to check in at the counter.

Vietjet Check in Error Message; we could not check in or purchase bags in advance to adhere to Vietjet Air baggage allowance.

It seems they prefer—or perhaps require—most passengers to check in at the counter, likely to weigh luggage (based on our experience with the strict Vietjet Air baggage allowance). More on baggage weight restrictions in the next paragraph.

2. Vietjet Air Baggage Allowance: Weight and Size Restrictions

Be prepared to have your bags weighed (and potentially weighed multiple times if you’re unlucky) due to the Vietjet Air Baggage Allowance. Given that my current trip is planned to last about a year, you can bet I stuffed my bags to the brim. Did I overpack? Absolutely. But, we can’t dwell on that now haha. When we booked our flights, we didn’t really consider the weight of our luggage. For reference, here are the restrictions:

Vietjet Air Carry-On Baggage:

Each passenger is allowed to carry on board two (2) pieces of cabin baggage comprising either:

Cabin baggage 1 piece, the dimensions MUST NOT exceed of 56cm (H) X 36cm (W) X 23cm (D) and MUST FIT in the overhead storage compartment in the aircraft cabin.

One (1) Laptop bag or one (1) handbag or one (1) small bag, MUST FIT under the seat in front of you.

The total weight of both pieces must not exceed 7kg.

Vietjet Air Standard Checked Baggage:

Each piece of checked baggage must not exceed 119 cm x 119 cm x 81 cm and weight not more than 32 kg.

Yes, you read that right—you can bring 2 items on board for free. These items ‘must not exceed 7 kg,’ or about 15 lbs. Any additional weight requires checking a bag, which cannot exceed 32 kg.

Since you can’t check in online (at least, we couldn’t), and have to do it at the counter, you’ll need to get your additional bags weighed and checked there. Checking a bag at the counter on the day of the flight is more expensive than pre-purchasing it online. Despite knowing this, the Vietjet system couldn’t find our profiles, so we had to check our bags in person.

I explained our situation to the woman at the counter, who was understanding enough to give us the lower rate. Just a heads-up: you’ll likely need cash to pay for checked bags and any other fees. I think they do have have credit card machines, but they seemed very hesitant to use those. Thankfully, she also let our slightly overweight personal and checked bags slide (they were only over by a couple of pounds, but still). This turned out well, as no one weighed our personal bags by the gate, but be cautious—online sources suggest they sometimes do, and then charge higher fees.

My personal item was slightly over 7 kilos (but, because of that woman, I didn’t have to reshuffle my things), and my checked bag was about 15 kilos, which I payed about $13 USD for.

3. Vietjet Bag Protections

If you find yourself needing to check your bag, be sure to keep all your valuable items with you in your personal luggage. The last thing you want is for your bag to be opened for inspection and something to mysteriously vanish. And trust me, you don’t want your valuables to disappear along with your entire suitcase. As you’ll see below, Vietjet Air only provides limited coverage for damages to your checked bags.

Compensation for Partly Damaged Baggage

(In VND)

Broken handle

150,000

Broken wheel

150,000

Broken zip

150,000

Crack or depression on surface

300,000

Tear

150,000

Depression

150,000

Broken bottom (wheels)

200,000

As of March, 2024

4. Saigonnais Business Airport Lounge

Now, let’s talk about travel credit cards. I currently use the Capital One Venture X card, and I’ve been really happy with it while traveling. There are no foreign transaction fees, and you get 2% back on all purchases. Plus, it comes with a perk called Priority Pass, which is why I’m bringing it up. The Saigonnais Business Lounge at the Tan Son Nhat International Airport (SGN) in Ho Chi Minh City, has great food and drinks. The best part? You can access it with your Priority Pass membership, at no extra cost! When else will you get to enjoy a bowl of Pho at an airport?

Source: www.prioritypass.com

5. Navigating to Your Final Destination

Before you even land in Vietnam, make sure to download an app called “Grab”. Grab is the local Uber and Uber Eats equivalent. You can easily request a car, or a motorbike to come and pick you up and take you to your final destination.

Compared to United States taxi prices, Grab prices are very affordable. A 20 minute car ride will cost you about $6. For an even cheaper alternative, if you’re traveling solo, try out the Grab motorbikes. Those will cost you about $1.50 for a 20 minute ride. Plus, you get the thrill of clutching onto a motorbike weaving through Vietnamese traffic. A thrill and a way to get from point A to point B.

Not to mention, Grab can also help you with grocery and package delivery. Apparently Grab can also be used as a local Venmo or PayPal, and you can get insurance through it. I have not used those services, so I cannot speak about my experience.

Final Thoughts

An icy beer on the overnight train to Hanoi.

All in all, I would not recommend Vietjet Airlines. If you are low on time, and you need to get to another city quickly, then yes, a flight is the way to go.

However, if you have some time to spare, and want to see more of Vietnam, consider booking an overnight train. You can get a very nice, 4 person or 2 person, air-conditioned cabin for your group and travel peacefully with all of your heavy bags.

In our case, we had another flight booked with Vietjet from Da Nang to Hanoi and they delayed the flight about 8 hours 2 weeks before the scheduled departure date.

So, we decided to cancel our tickets (if you book your flight through a credit card travel portal like the one Capital One has, you may be able to cancel your trip for a small fee, we payed about $12 USD per ticket for a refund) and book an overnight train.

It was so much fun getting to experience Vietnam in that way. Plus, I don’t think anyone cares about how many bags you bring and how much those bags weight.

When you think of Vietnamese food, what do you think of?

The only dish that I was remotely familiar with before quitting my job and moving to Vietnam for 3 months was Pho. Even with Pho, though, I’ve maybe had it twice in my entire life. I didn’t even know that it is traditionally a breakfast food!

In the blog post below, I detail my experience with Vietnamese food by region, starting with the south of the country, and moving to the north. Let’s dive right in.

Table of Contents

Hồ Chí Minh City

How big is Ho Chi Minh City?

What is phở?

What is phở tái?

Best Places to Eat in Hồ Chí Minh City

Đà Nẵng

What is bánh xèo?

What is mì Quảng?

Best Places to Eat in Đà Nẵng

Huế

What is bún bò Huế?

What is rau muống?

Best Place to Eat in Huế

Hội An

What is a bánh mì?

What is cao lầu?

Best Places to Eat in Hội An

Conclusion

Hồ Chí Minh City

Statue of Ho Chi Minh, in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam

Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC), formally known as Saigon, is one of the most unique cities that I have ever been to. It is a giant metropolis, renowned for its diverse and delicious food scene, consisting of 24 diverse districts (I assure you, these are much more interesting districts than in the Hunger Games).

How big is Ho Chi Minh City?

Huge! Almost 9 million people call HCMC their home and it spans about 809 square miles. Compared to New York City, that has a population of 8.5 million people, 469 square miles, and you realize just how huge Ho Chi Minh City is. Add in about 7.3 million motorbikes, and you get one of the coolest (even though it’s wildly hot and humid haha) cities in Southeast Asia.

The city’s culinary landscape is a vibrant blend of traditional Vietnamese flavors and international influences, offering a wide array of dishes to satisfy any person. From alleyway street food stalls to three-dollar-sign restaurants, HCMC boasts a rich culinary heritage that showcases the best of Vietnamese cuisine.

Pho is a traditional Vietnamese breakfast noodle soup that is known for its broth, rice noodles, and herbs. To enjoy pho, start by sampling the broth, which is often simmered for hours with spices like star anise, cinnamon, and cloves. Next, add fresh herbs like Thai basil, cilantro, and sawtooth herb, along with bean sprouts and a squeeze of lime to taste.

While traveling from southern Vietnam to northern Vietnam, I noticed that the further north you go, the less herbs you are provided with your soup orders. In Ho Chi Minh City, for example, our table was often given what can only be described as an entire bush of fresh herbs with each meal. However, in Hanoi, you often don’t receive any herbs on the side of your dish; they are typically already added to the soup.

Pho tai, is pho with thinly sliced rare beef that, upon being added to the broth, cooks instantly in your bowl. This variation is my personal favorite, as it highlights the delicate flavors of the beef, adding a unique texture to the dish.

Banh xeo, a popular Central Vietnamese dish, is a savory crepe made from rice flour, coconut milk, and turmeric, giving it its distinctive yellow color. The name “banh xeo” translates to “sizzling cake,” which refers to the sound the batter makes when it hits the hot skillet.

The crepe is typically filled with a variety of ingredients, including shrimp, pork, bean sprouts, and green onions. It’s often served with a side of fresh herbs and lettuce, which are used to wrap the crispy crepe before dipping it in a sweet and tangy dipping sauce. Banh xeo is not only delicious but also a fun and interactive dish to enjoy with friends and family.

When I first saw this pancake in Ho Chi Minh City, I was convinced that it had eggs. To my surprise, I found out that there are no eggs in Ban xeo at all! The turmeric is what makes the batter yellow and look like an omelet.

Mì Quảng, or “Quảng noodles,” (often pronounced me-wang) is a beloved Vietnamese noodle dish with roots in Quảng Nam Province, which is very close to Da Nang, in central Vietnam. It holds a special place in the region’s culinary culture, often enjoyed at family gatherings, during death anniversaries, and as a traditional dish for Tết, the Vietnamese Lunar New Year.

The dish consists of turmeric-infused rice noodles that have a satisfying bite. The noodles are surrounded by a very rich turmeric broth/sauce. Since the broth is so flavorful, there is typically much less of it in the bowl.

What is bún bò Huế?

Bun bo Hue – the name itself provides a breakdown of its key components: “bún” refers to the round rice vermicelli noodles that form the base of the dish, while “bò” indicates the beef that is the primary protein in the soup. “Huế” signifies the dish’s origin in the historic city of Huế, known for its imperial past.

This iconic noodle soup is a testament to Vietnam’s culinary diversity, blending flavors and ingredients from different regions. It features a flavorful lemongrass broth, the result of hours spent simmering beef bones and lemongrass. Despite its name, bun bo Hue also includes pork bones and sausage.

When my partner Alex and I were planning our trip to Vietnam, we were determined to explore this city and try its famous soup. Bun bo Hue has easily become one of my top picks for Vietnamese cuisine. The broth strikes a perfect balance of rich flavor, citrusy hints, fresh mint, and basil. It’s safe to say, this dish has won us over:)

Check out my friend Tyler’s video about bun bo Hue:

What is rau muống?

Rau muống, or Morning Glory, is a plant that got its name from its behavior of blooming in the morning and closing by midday. This characteristic led to its association with the fleeting beauty of youth, as reflected in its name in Vietnamese, “rau muống.” The plant’s ability to thrive in various conditions and its quick growth also contribute to its symbolic meaning of vitality and resilience.

Morning glory is a staple vegetable in Vietnamese cuisine and is particularly popular in Huế. This leafy green vegetable is versatile and can be cooked in various ways, but one of the most common and delicious ways to prepare it is in a stir-fry.

What is a bánh mì?

Banh mi sandwiches vary across Vietnam, reflecting regional tastes and ingredients.

In Hanoi, the traditional banh mi typically includes pate, cold cuts, and pickled vegetables. It’s known for its simplicity and balance of flavors.

In Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon), banh mi tends to be more diverse and feature a wider range of ingredients. Saigon banh mi often includes additional fillings like grilled pork, fried eggs, and various sauces, reflecting the city’s multicultural influences.

In central Vietnam, banh mi often includes different types of savory fillings like nem lui (grilled pork sausage) and cha (pork meatloaf), along with fresh herbs and vegetables. The bread in central Vietnam is also slightly different, with a softer texture compared to the crustier baguettes used in other regions.

Overall, while the basic elements of banh mi remain consistent—a crispy baguette, savory fillings, pickled vegetables, and fresh herbs—the specific ingredients and flavors can vary significantly across Vietnam’s regions.

In Hoi An, the Banh Mi Queen cafe is a must-visit. This iconic eatery is known for its delicious and affordable (each one is about $2 USD) sandwiches. The Banh Mi Queen offers a variety of fillings, including grilled pork, chicken, tofu, and a range of fresh herbs and vegetables, all stuffed into a crispy baguette.

Personally, I absolutely loved this spot because of the meatier flavor of the banh mi. The owners have a commitment to using fresh, locally sourced ingredients, and since so many people visit, the ingredient turnover is also very high.

What is cao lầu?

Cao lau, loosely translates to high up, or top story of a building. In the days of Hoi An’s trading port, merchants who stopped in the city, wanted to eat where they could see their trading vessels, so they would ask to be seated on the top floor of the building. Hence, the dish’s name. This culinary gem emerged in 17th-century Hoi An, a time of thriving East-West trade that helped create a unique blend of flavors and textures.

Cao lau features signature noodles, Chinese char siu beef, and chewy textures similar to Japanese Udon. The noodles, crucial to its character, are made using water from Hoi An’s ancient wells, giving them a unique texture and flavor. The pork, typically loin or trotter, undergoes a meticulous process of marination, frying, and roasting, adding layers of flavor.

The broth, simmered with the same well water, adds a depth that is probably impossible to replicate on your own. To finish, fresh greens like mint, basil, and cilantro/coriander, along with crispy squares of Cao Lau dough, are added. Because of the specific well water-based noodles and broth, it is very difficult to find this dish anywhere in Vietnam, besides Hoi An.

Conclusion

This is by no means an exhaustive list of Vietnamese dishes and places to eat in Vietnam. However, I hope that it’s a good starting point. While traveling this wonderful country I have realized that it would be near impossible to gather a comprehensive list of all of the amazing food that Vietnam has to offer. So, think of this blog post as a challenge. What dishes would you add to the list?

Da Nang’s History

Nestled on Vietnam’s beautiful central coast, Da Nang stands out as a bustling city, renowned for its vibrant culture and rich history. As the country’s fifth-largest city, Da Nang boasts a strategic location at the mouth of the Hàn River, making it a key port city and transport hub.

Once a part of the ancient Champa Kingdom, Da Nang has a deep-rooted history that is evident in its diverse culture and architecture. The city’s name, derived from the Cham Pa language, means “the big river flowing into the sea,” reflecting its location and thriving development. Over the centuries, Da Nang has evolved into a modern metropolis, blending French colonial influences with traditional Vietnamese charm.

Da Nang’s Climate

Da Nang’s climate is characterized by warm temperatures and distinct wet and dry seasons. The best time to visit is from March to May and September to October, when the weather is pleasant (much cooler than in Ho Chi Minh City) and rainfall is minimal. We visited Da Nang in March, and it rained maybe twice during that time.

Places to Visit in Da Nang

Surrounded by picturesque landscapes of the Pacific Ocean and the Truong Song Mountains, Da Nang is in close proximity to several charming cities and attractions. To the south, the ancient town of Hoi An awaits, with its well-preserved architecture, rich history, lantern festivals, and tailor shops. To the north, the imperial city of Hue offers a glimpse into Vietnam’s royal past, with its stunning citadel, historic monuments, and delicious food.

With its rich history, vibrant culture, and stunning natural beauty, Da Nang offers a unique blend of old-world charm, modern convenience, and a relaxed atmosphere, making it a must-visit destination in Vietnam.

Dragon Bridge

If you end up staying at any of the taller apartment buildings in the city, you will likely be able to see the majestic Dragon Bridge. It is huge! The bridge, designed in the shape of a dragon, symbolizes prosperity and power; locals believe that the dragon’s presence brings good luck and protection to those who cross the bridge.

As the sun sets, the bridge comes alive with an intricate light show, illuminating the dragon’s body in a mesmerizing array of colors. Legend has it that the Dragon Bridge is more than just a bridge; it is a guardian of the city, watching over its people and warding off evil spirits. According to local folklore, the dragon that adorns the bridge is a descendant of the dragon demigod, who once saved the city from invaders by spitting fire and water to create a protective barrier.

Speaking of fire and water, on weekend days at 9PM, the dragon actually spits out real fireballs and after the fire, spits out quite a bit of water. So, unless you want to get absolutely soaked, do not stand directly in front of the Dragon’s head AND be aware of the direction of the wind, as the water will blow in that same direction onto the people below.

The Marble Mountains

View from the top of the Marble Mountains in Da Nang, Vietnam

The Marble Mountains technically lie outside Da Nang’s city limits, but they’re such a short 15-minute Grab ride away that I decided to include them here. My top tip? Head to the Marble Mountains right when they open at 7AM. This way, you can beat the heat while exploring the caves and avoid the crowds of tourists. My boyfriend and I, however, didn’t make it there until around 8 AM because, well, we wanted to sleep in lol. By then, it was already starting to get pretty crowded.

Now, you might be wondering if you have to hike all the way up the Marble Mountains. The answer is no! There’s an elevator available for about 75 cents one way per person, which takes you up most of the way. But be prepared for some wonky steps and trails even after taking the elevator. We opted for the elevator both ways, and the whole trip from Da Nang and back took us about 2 hours.

Lady Buddha

If you’re tight on time and debating whether to visit the Marble Mountains or Lady Buddha in Da Nang for sunrise, I’d suggest the latter. Lady Buddha is incredibly peaceful in the morning, and you might even catch a glimpse of some monkeys.

We rented some bikes from Bee Bike – Bike Tours and Bike Rentals in Da Nang the day before our ride because of how early we were going to set out. The whole trip took us about 3.5 hours, and we started around 5:30AM to catch the sunrise.

I was initially worried that the ride on the way there would be too steep and difficult for me. However, this was not the case at all! Don’t get me wrong, there were maybe 2-3 hills that I had to walk my bike up, but it wasn’t too bad. Plus, the ride on the way down is really epic. You have the ocean on one side of you, and monkeys/cool jungle views on the other.

Be sure to wear modest clothing, as this is a religious site. I highly recommend this excursion!

The Son Tra Peninsula

Da Nang is a much more relaxed city with less traffic than Ho Chi Minh City. Just a short drive away from the city center lies the Son Tra Peninsula, also known as Monkey Mountain. This tranquil oasis is home to the Son Tra Nature Reserve, offering lush greenery, pristine beaches, and stunning ocean views. The peninsula is perfect for nature lovers and can be explored by motorbike or car.

Tom, from the Vietnam Coracle, put it well:

By far the best way to explore Son Tra is by motorbike. The roads are good, the distances short, but the rewards huge. In fact, this is one of the most scenic stretches of coast road anywhere in Vietnam. A day or two riding the swirling tarmac on Son Tra Peninsula is definitely one of the best things to do in Danang.

When I was researching things to do in Da Nang, I found his blog posts extremely useful. I highly recommend you check out his blog: here

Cowabunga, am I right? Taking a surfing lesson in Da Nang, was definitely a highlight of my trip. Prior to this class, I had never even held a surfboard, let alone stood up on one. But, guess what? Not only did I catch a couple of waves, I got a high five from my surfing instructor, which felt like an even bigger accomplishment.

There a lots of surf shops to chose from in Da Nang, it is truly a beginner surfer paradise. My friend Brittney and I chose the Da Nang Outdoor Adventures Company, simply because we thought their value offering was the best out of the places we looked at. For a 2 hour private surfing lesson, we paid $93 USD, meaning, each of us paid $46.50. Based on our research, this is a pretty good deal considering you get 2 whole hours with the instructor. Other places offered $80.11 per a 75 minute private lesson.

It is important to note though, that, as a beginner, you will likely not be able to sustain learning to surf for 2 whole hours. Brittney and I were completely exhausted (and totally sunburnt) after about an hour and a half.

The surfing shop we went with, also offered a discount on surfboard rentals ($8 for a half day rental), if you took a lesson with them.

Explore Local Markets

Grilled oysters from Da Nang, Vietnam

The local markets in and around Da Nang are vibrant and bustling! One of the most popular markets is Han Market, located right in the heart of Da Nang. Here, you can find a wide range of goods, from fresh produce and local delicacies to clothing, handicrafts, and souvenirs. I would combine a trip here with a trip to the Dragon Bridge, as they are a short walking distance from one another.

Another must-visit market is Con Market, known for its fresh seafood and local specialties.

Just a short drive from Da Nang is the An Thuong Night Market, where you can shop for handmade crafts and enjoy a variety of street food. These markets are not only great places to shop and eat, but also offer a glimpse into the local way of life, making them a must-visit for anyone exploring Da Nang and its surroundings.

Get a Massage

Something that is super popular here, in Vietnam, are massages. This, I assume, has to do with Vietnam’s current cost of living (it is very low) and how affordable massages can be when compared to the United States. For example, Alex and I celebrated our 5 year anniversary in Da Nang, and to commemorate that fact, we booked a fancy couples massage at the Belle Maison Hotel’s Spa for about $56. This is what was included in that price:

Welcome tea and snack

15 minute herbal foot soak

15 minute sauna session

15 minute steam shower session

75 minute massage (I chose the traditional Vietnamese bamboo massage)

60 minute facial (I chose the facial targeted toward combination skin)

More tea

So, in total, we spent about $112 between the two of us, for a 3 hour spa experience. That is a deal when you compare it to American prices, when a luxury spa could run you $200 just for 1 massage.

Day Trips from Da Nang

Hue

Hue is known as the “imperial city of Vietnam” and has a lot of interesting history and architecture. It is only about a 3 hour train ride or a 1.5 hour bus ride from Da Nang. I highly recommend you take the train at least for one part of your trip. Tickets for a private, air conditioned, 2 person cabin are about $20 each and the trip itself is wildly scenic. We didn’t love taking the limo bus (about $10 USD per person) on the way back, so I cannot recommend that. If there are four people in your group, hiring a private car for about ($60 USD per car) is much more worthwhile.

For accommodations, you can book a pretty sweet 5 star resort for less than $100 USD a night that includes access to a sauna/steam shower (if you have a good travel card, you can book a hotel with points). My boyfriend and I stayed at the Silk Path Hotel, and absolutely loved it. We ordered room service for about $30 USD and watched a show in the evening. The perfect way to end a full day.

Hoi An

The Thu Bon River in Hoi An, Vietnam

Hoi An is another city that may be worth visiting. Book yet another sweet hotel, either by the beach or closer to the city, enjoy the complimentary bike rental and take a ride through Vietnamese countryside (just bring some big spay).

Our weekend schedule is below, hopefully you’re a foodie, like us:)

11AM – Explore more of Hoi An’s Old Town or head back to Da Nang

Bạch Mã National Park

Bach Ma National Park, while located near Hue, is easily accessible from Da Nang, making it a popular day trip destination for visitors to the coastal city. A highlight is the trek to Bach Ma Mountain’s summit, which offers stunning panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and coastline.

The park is home to a variety of wildlife, including rare species such as the red-shanked douc langur and the giant muntjac. Visitors can explore the park’s diverse ecosystems, from lush rainforests to cool mountain streams, and take a dip in the refreshing waters of the five lakes trail. The park is easily accessible from Da Nang, making it a popular day trip destination for those looking to escape the city and immerse themselves in nature.

Ba Na Hills

Ba Na Hills, near Da Nang, Vietnam, is a popular destination known for its stunning mountain views, cool climate, and iconic attractions like the Golden Bridge and French Village. While many visitors flock to see the Golden Bridge held up by giant stone hands, my friends and I decided to skip it.

Da Nang’s foggy conditions often obscure the view of the hands, and the area tends to be crowded with tourists. Additionally, the line for the mountain coaster, another popular attraction, can be quite long and time-consuming. I just figured I would include this popular day trip here, so you can make a more informed decision for your own Vietnam trip.

Da Nang Waterfalls

If you’re seeking adventure, consider booking a tour with Da Nang Waterfalls. These guides are experts in the area and have discovered some truly amazing spots. I highly recommend adding on the easy rider and lunch options. We opted for these and were picked up right at our rented apartment.

Once you hop on the back of the motorbike, you will head off on a beautiful 1 hour drive through the Vietnamese countryside. I will say to be prepared for the drivers to go fast. When I say fast, I mean about 50-70 kilometers an hour (I know this doesn’t seem too fast when I talk about it, but just trust me, when you’re on that motorbike, it feels like you’re zoomin’ haha).

Once you arrive to this mysterious location (somewhere near here), you will begin an hour long, mostly uphill, trek through the jungle. When I say the jungle, I am not exaggerating. At one point, we were on a more mainstream path, when our guide just turned into the thick jungle (we asked him how he found this place, and he simply said, “by exploring”).

Then, you are rewarded with 3 beautiful, remote waterfalls, some deep enough to cliff jump into. It was absolutely worth the sweaty uphill hike!

Conclusion

From exploring ancient temples and historical sites to relaxing on long, pristine beaches and indulging in the bustling local markets, Da Nang offers a diverse range of experiences for every traveler. Whether you’re seeking adventure, relaxation, or cultural immersion, Da Nang has something to offer. With its warm hospitality and picturesque landscapes, Da Nang is truly a destination that should not be missed.
